Producer Robin Cass in attendance!

Set in 1983, just after the birth of Automated Teller Machines, High Life is a story of kinship, loyalty, and honour among thieves. In a busy downtown hospital, a visit from his former socio-pathic cellmate Bug (Stephen Eric McIntyre) has just gotten Dick fired from his job as a hospital janitor. Unemployed and in need of fast cash Dick gets the idea to rob one of the day’s brand new ATM machines, to “buy a little self-respect”, announces Dick to Bug and the team. Enter the charismatic, criminally-minded Donnie, (Joe Anderson) and the front-man, the sexy, sleepy-eyed charmer Billy, (Rossif Sutherland) and all of the pieces are in place. “It’s a precision job,” says Dick the night before the heist: “No violence.” You think?

Naturally things don’t go according to plan and the unfolding catalogue of disasters that confronts Dick is enough to test any friend’s loyalties as the lovable losers bungle their way toward a pipe-dream of quick riches. Alternately tragic and hysterical, High Life’s perfect plan ends up anything but when one of the bank’s employees double-crosses them all. Set against the nostalgic back-beat of Three Dog Night, Creedence Clearwater Revival and a raft of April Wine, High Life’s highwire tension unfolds with calamitous results.

Max Streicher
sketch for ‘Architecture of Cloud’, 2010
Tyvek, electric fans

Max Streicher’s immense inflatable sculptures spark a wondrous encounter. Created specifically for the AGH’s sculpture atrium, Streicher’s new work draws from the cathedral-like setting of the atrium. Though this soft form is overwhelming in scale, it also invites the viewer to engage with it, walk around it, look upward and inside the form. Filled with air that is blown into the structure using electric fans, the form is intensely captivating, its organic shape inviting a multitude of associations. As Streicher writes, “I use air to animate my work because it provides an effortless naturalism. It not only looks right, it feels right, recollecting our sensation of breath. Inflatables are the medium of enchantment, fantasy and optimism…”.

Streicher is based in Toronto. Since 1991 he has worked extensively with kinetic inflatable forms. He has exhibited his work across Canada in numerous public galleries and artist-run centres. He has completed several site-related projects, most recently in Venice, Siena, Stockholm and Erfurt, Germany. The AGH is pleased to premier this work.

Posing Beauty: African American Images from the 1890s to the Present
by Deborah Willis

Hardcover - $62.50* (+ GST) *SPECIAL PRICING: AGH Members receive 10% off this publication.

Deborah Willis is the author of the best-selling Obama: The Historic Campaign in Photographs and the award-winning Reflections in Black. She is the recipient of MacArthur, Guggenheim, and Fletcher Fellowships, and has curated numerous exhibitions. She is the chair of the Photography and Imaging Department at the Tisch School of the Arts and a University Professor at New York University.

The first photographic history of black beauty. It tells a story overlooked by most of America, and promises to transform the way we think about the history of African American visual culture. Deborah Willis, whose much-celebrated Reflections in Black provided the first definitive history of black photographers, has now collected over two hundred photographs in duotone and full color that provide a lasting statement on beauty in the African American community. From posed studio portraits to dandies on parade to elegant debutantes, Willis has constructed a bold narrative of the ever-changing idea of beauty, both female and male, and shows how history books, newspapers, and mainstream magazines deliberately excluded black models until the late 1960s and early 1970s. Each photograph opens a window into an entire world of African American life. Edward Curtis and Thomas Askew capture African American society women at the turn of the century, while Russell Lee's photographs of the early 1940s show a prosperous Chicagoan in his smoking jacket and a crowd of young boys on Easter. Willis has also discovered other images, some of them taken by lesser known but equally gifted photographers, which document the world of the barbershop, the beauty salon, and the beauty pageant. More recently, there are Anthony Barboza's series of photos from the streets of Harlem in the early 1970s and Carl De Keyzer's images of natty preachers and families in their Sunday best, which echo Henri Cartier-Bresson's earlier photos of Harlem residents dressed for Easter Sunday parades. While celebrating ordinary people, Posing Beauty is also filled with photographs of the famous, from Josephine Baker to Lil' Kim. Classic photos of Muhammad Ali, James Brown, and Ray Charles, among others, bear witness to the rise of African American celebrities in the 1960s, while images of Stokely Carmichael, Malcolm X, and Rosa Parks show just how politically powerful beauty can be. More contemporary photos of Sean "P. Diddy" Combs, Denzel Washington, and the Obamas demonstrate how African American beauty has actually often come to dominate popular American culture. Posing Beauty's democratic vision, one that incorporates the dapper man on the street with the pop star of the movie screen, opens up a new vista for understanding what exactly beauty meant for people in the past and what it means for all of us today.

T.N.T. (Thursday Night Talks)
Stealing Beauty: The Fine Art of Art Theft
Thursday, April 22 at 7:00 pm

Art theft has been ranked as the fourth largest criminal enterprise. The FBI estimates it is worth about $6-billion a year. And, recovery rates are shockingly low – only five to eight percent of stolen works are ever recovered. Even the AGH has been a victim, having had several works stolen from the gallery in 1960 and not recovered until 1965. Stories and legends abound, and the truth is often just as interesting. Please join our scintillating discussion where T.N.T. asks – who gets away with an art heist?

Our expert panel includes best-selling author, Simon Houpt, author of Museum of the Missing: A History of Art Theft and writer for The Globe and Mail; Raymond Morrell, Wellesley Consulting Services; and Bonnie Czegledi of International Art & Cultural Heritage Law.
