Education Volunteers (Docent Programme)


Great at public speaking? Active or retired teacher? Then you should become a Docent at the Art Gallery of Hamilton.

Next Training Sessions
New docent training will consist of eight sessions:
Dates: Mondays – starting in March 2008 (date to be determined)
Time: 4:00 – 6:00 pm
Location: AGH, Jean and Ross Fischer Community Gallery

What do Docent Volunteers do?
  • Deliver exhibition tours to school groups (ranging from grade one to post-graduate level) and adult groups
  • Conduct research on artists in preparation for upcoming exhibitions
  • Learn about touring techniques, tour planning and art interpretation
  • Learn about art through guest speakers

    What skills are required for this position?
  • Background or keen interest in art
  • Strong communication skills
  • Desire to teach and share ideas

    What level of commitment is expected?
  • Required to complete an eight-week training program
  • Expected to attend all bi-weekly docent meetings (Mondays 2:00 to 4:00 pm)
  • Available weekdays, September through June, for approximately 4 hours per week, and some evenings or weekends
  • Available to lead a minimum of 4 tours per month
