The influence of Africa continues to be
far-reaching and a source of inspiration for creative expression around the world. In 2010, the Art Gallery
of Hamilton is pleased to host a year-long celebration of the influence of African arts and culture on the
world. This series of projects, activities, events and exhibitions will celebrate the richness and diversity
of African arts and culture and its influence on global creative output.
Central to this exciting year is an engaging offering of historical and contemporary exhibitions, beginning
with this season’s lead exhibition, Posing Beauty. Summer exhibitions will include Europe’s Exoticized East exploring 19th-century Orientalist art; Joey and Toby Tanenbaum’s stunning African Collection in Dance of Life: The Tanenbaum African Collection; and the work of Brendan Fernandes, a Kenyan-born contemporary
artist of Goan-Indian heritage.
Film screenings, events, performances, talks and educational programmes for families, children, youth and
adults complement the exhibitions, and offer visitors and AGH Members many opportunities throughout
the year to explore the vitality of African arts and culture.
Vital Africa is under the patronage of The Honourable Lincoln M. Alexander PC, OC, BA, LLD.
