Doug MacBean is a contemporary painter born in Toronto, Ontario. MacBean began painting at the age of 14, when his parents bought his first set of oil paints. He continues to paint in oils in a traditional style. His works include local landscapes of the Gage Park Fountain and the Hamilton Harbour, although he works in many different genres. MacBean is also prolific in portraiture, watercolours, acrylic, pastel, charcoal as well as commercial art and computer design. When speaking of his work, MacBean states:
“Creating atmosphere in a painting is paramount. This is the measure of success for most painters. I have miles to go yet, of course. The texture and depth achieved with oil paints has given me the ability to convey what I like best in painting.”
MacBean attended the Ontario College of Art and Design, graduating in 1991. His pieces have won many prizes and are represented in many private and institutional collections. He is now based out of Hamilton, Ontario.
