Drawn In: Gallery Sketching McNicoll

Location: Art Gallery of Hamilton

Take part in an engaging, hands-on sketching experience within the Helen McNicoll: An Impressionist’s Journey exhibition. In this drop-in class, students will sketch directly from the McNicoll’s artworks while exploring a different theme each session.

Artist/Instructor Amanda McKinney Sparrow will guide you through key elements such as female figures, light and shadow, composition, and landscapes, offering insights into McNicoll’s techniques and artistic vision. Whether you’re a beginner or seasoned artist, each session will provides a unique opportunity to enhance your technical skills and creative insight.

Open to all skill levels

Materials: sketch book, pencil, eraser

DATES:
Saturdays, 2 – 4pm

  • April 26 – Lighting the Studio
    This session will focus on McNicoll’s exploration of interiors, painted in her final years and at the height of the suffrage movement. Students will learn techniques in line, proportion, and feathering.
  • May 3 – On the Boulevard
    This session will explore McNicoll’s transatlantic mobility through her urban scenes, from Montréal to France and England. Students will learn techniques in perspective, unity, and tonal scribbles.

 


Artist-Instructor Bio:
Growing up in the Niagara Wine region of Southern Ontario, Amanda drew inspiration from an agricultural based community. Amanda began post secondary school in Early Childhood Education and Photography at Niagara College. This led to an Art Fundamentals Certificate at Sheridan College and a BFA at the Ontario College of Art and Design. A mother, practicing artist, Amanda has been teaching art for the past twenty years.
