The Art Gallery of Hamilton is proud to be hosting a series of Mindful Movement classes, led by Instructor Nathan Eugene Carson, for those seeking a restorative and contemplative experience in the Gallery’s exhibition spaces.
This program is open to people of all skill levels, ages 14 and up.
Each class will consist of 60 minutes of movement, followed by 30 minutes of meditation. The program will endeavour to improve participants’ body awareness, flexibility and strength while supporting stress and anxiety relief.
Wednesday Night | 6:30 – 8:00 PM
Each session will include the following elements:
Mindful Walking and Aerobic Fitness
A walking and fitness meditation that involves walking and intentional movement. Simpler lower intensity movements that may be good for beginners, older adults, or those looking to build confidence.
Mindful Yoga
Simple attentive movement, gentle breathing, and guided contemplative practices.
Mindful Journaling / Mindful Mark Making
An accessible hands on activity including the process of creating lines, dots, patterns, textures, and marks on a surface using a variety of tools and materials. This creative and experimental process can be used to thoughtfully express emotions and feelings.
Mindful Breath Work
Mindful breathing is a meditation practice that involves focusing on your breath and its natural rhythm to improve one’s mental health and well-being.
Mindful Meditation
Mindfulness meditation is a type of meditation that involves being aware of current thoughts and feelings without judgment or interpretation while promoting self-awareness.
Instructor Bio: Nathan Eugene Carson (b. 1980, lives and works in Hamilton, Ontario) received a BFA from the Ontario College of Art and Design. His drawings and paintings have since been shown globally. Carson’s most recent solo exhibition was an Art residency at The Art Gallery of Hamilton titled Black Carnival (2023). To complement his artistic practice, Nathan has successfully completed a 500-hour meditation training and a 200-hour yoga training.

MATERIALS
Limited mats will be available for use. Participants are encouraged to bring their own mat, water bottle, and any supports they’d like to use. You may also bring a journal or sketchbook and pencil for mindful journaling / mark making. Additional materials will be provided.
