Suibokuga/Sumi-e, is the Japanese art of monochromatic ink painting that combines minimalist art with meditation. This six-week introductory-level course will explore the history, philosophy, and techniques of suibokuga/sumi-e water ink painting. Students will learn to utilize gradations of sumi-e ink to create a sense of light and dark, as well as modulated brush strokes to create expressive lines with rhythm and volume. A variety of monochrome ink painting techniques will be modelled to enhance your understanding of perspective and depth focusing to effectively eliminate unnecessary elements.
