Carolyn Cheng is a contemporary Canadian photographer currently living and working in Toronto, Ontario. Inspired by her lifelong passion of adventure travel, her primary focus of artistic interest involves landscape investigations through abstract aerial photography.
Cheng is captivated by a particular psychological experience known as pareidolia, whereby people ascribe patterns or human characteristics to otherwise random, abstract elements.
“I’m inspired by unusual aerial landscapes. While in the air, I capture my spontaneous reaction to the landscape, creating abstract, lyrical images that I hope will also evoke similar affective or bodily responses in the viewer.”
Capturing spontaneous fragments of the landscape taken from above by helicopter or a Cessna, she prioritizes her immediate, personal reactions to those aerial experiences of the landscape. She aspires her work to invoke a universally relatable experience of a similar kind of fascination for her viewers.
