Norval Morrisseau (Copper Thunderbird) is known and referred to as the founder of the Woodlands style. The documentary begins with Kevin Hearn (of the Barenaked Ladies) spending $20,000 on what he had thought was an authentic Morrisseau work titled Spirit Energy of Mother Earth, which then had its authenticity put to debate. What stemmed from this was an investigation into the painting’s authenticity, alongside other Morrisseau works. What was discovered was an art fraud ring, with each of its white contributors claiming to be the true protector of the Anishinaabe painter’s legacy.
