Made in Hamilton: Urban En Plein Air

Experience Hamilton through the eyes of an artist in this three-session urban en plein air program led by artist and instructor James Gummerson. Participants will explore a variety of iconic downtown locations, sketching and painting on-site while engaging with the city’s architecture, streetscapes, public spaces, and hidden details.

Each session will visit three different locations, offering opportunities to observe, interpret, and create in response to Hamilton’s unique urban character. Artists of all experience levels are welcome, and participants are encouraged to work in their preferred medium, whether drawing, watercolour, acrylic, ink, or mixed media.


Need to Know
  • Meet Location: Lower Lobby of the Art Gallery of Hamilton, Main Door
  • Participants are encouraged to bring their own art materials – all artistic mediums are welcome
  • Don’t have supplies? A basic watercolour kit, brush, and paper or canvas will be provided
  • Containers used for water or other materials must have secure, tight-fitting lids

James Gummerson

Hamilton-based painter James Gummerson, after attending Sheridan College of Applied Arts and Technology, embarked on a remarkable artistic journey. After College he shifted his focus towards creating captivating paintings and explored many different subjects and styles. In recent years the direction of his work has shifted to understanding his coexistence between himself and the urban landscape. His works have graced galleries and shows across Canada, earning him recognition and numerous awards.
