Talks & Tours

Curator Talk: Proof in the Painting with Tobi Bruce

7:00 pm - 9:00 pm

Thursday, March 20, 2025

Tickets Required

Location: Art Gallery of Hamilton

Join us for two intriguing talks that delve into the world of art authentication and the very real detective work involved in finding long lost artworks. Come behind the scenes and learn how curators research, find, and authenticate works of art. From provenance research, to art historical analysis, to cutting-edge scientific methods, our experts will guide you through real-life case studies, sharing stories of both triumphs and challenges in trying to uncover the truth behind artworks.

Tobi’s talk will be split into two parts. First, she’ll take us through the fascinating process of authenticating artworks, using two possible Tom Thomson works as her examples. Then, Tobi will share the thrilling behind-the-scenes work she’s done in trying to authenticate a long-lost William Blair Bruce painting. While she’s made great strides, she’s still a bit stumped and is eager for fresh eyes and new ideas. Ready to help crack the case?

Whether you’re an art enthusiast, collector, or aspiring professional, these talks will provide invaluable insights into how long-lost works are found and what makes an artwork truly original.

Don’t miss this unique opportunity to understand the hidden complexities of art research and authentication and discover the fascinating world where art, history, and real-life detective work comes together.

Presented as part of the exhibition Helen McNicoll: An Impressionist Journey.

Tobi Bruce is the Director of Exhibitions and Collections and Senior Curator at the Art Gallery of Hamilton. She is a Canadian art historian who places curatorial collaboration at the centre of her practice.
