In Conversation with Curators of The Bigger Picture: Art in Hamilton 1950-2000

Join us for a discussion about The Bigger Picture: Art in Hamilton 1950-2000, which was guest curated by Alexis Moline in consultation with Bryce Kanbara. Alexis and Bryce will discuss the exhibition, including its origins and key themes, as well as the open call process that brought together over 200 artist contributors.

About the Speakers:

Alexis Moline is an independent curator, arts professional and writer who has worked in Vancouver, Toronto and Hamilton. She received her Master of Museum Studies in collaboration with Sexual Diversity Studies from the University of Toronto. She was recently the curator for the Building Cultural Legacies project at the Hamilton Arts Council, and curated The Bigger Picture: Art in Hamilton 1950-2000 stemming from this project at the Art Gallery of Hamilton in September 2022. She has worked extensively within the Hamilton arts community, supporting hundreds of artists through her research and curation.

Bryce Kanbara was born and educated in Hamilton, Ontario. A visual artist and the curator and proprietor of the you me gallery since 2003, he was also the founding member and first administrator of Hamilton Artists Inc. He has held curatorial positions at the Burlington Art Centre, the Art Gallery of Hamilton, the Glenhyrst Art Gallery of Brant and the Art Gallery @ the Japanese Canadian Cultural Centre, in Toronto. In addition, he has served as the executive director of the National Association of Japanese Canadians’ Toronto chapter and as the Chair of the National Association of Japanese Canadians (NAJC) Endowment Fund. Over the years, he has also been a National Executive member of the NAJC, a Visual Arts, Crafts & Designer Officer at the Ontario Arts Council, the co-Chair of the Board of Directors of the Workers Arts & Heritage Centre and a Governing Council member for the Hamilton Centre for Civic Inclusion. Bryce Kanbara lives in Hamilton, Ontario.
