A Gala Evening Inspired by Vital Africa, the Art Gallery of Hamilton’s year-long celebration of African Art and Culture, presented by TD Bank Financial Group.
Makossa! The Joy of Africa ... The Art Gallery of Hamilton’s must-attend, guaranteed sold-out Gala returns, offering an intoxicating blend of dining and drumbeats, food and frolic, drama and dancing, as we celebrate the influence of African arts and culture on the world.
Organized by the Council of Governors and Board of Directors with proceeds benefiting AGH programming.

Njacko Backo with Kalimba Kalimba

Entertainer, musician, composer, dancer, choreographer, author and educator Njacko Backo shares his uplifting music, energizing dance, and hope-filled stories with audiences of all ages and all walks of life. Njacko was born in Cameroon in 1958 and raised in the hills in a small village called Bazou, which means "The Walkers." To paint a picture of life in his village, Njacko often points to the movie The Gods Must Be Crazy to demonstrate the truly rural and organic nature of his upbringing.
Njacko has worked with several well-respected artists including Jane Bunnett, Yaya Diallo, and Ken Whiteley, and has been a guest artist on more than 15 albums. He has appeared at major festivals including the Hillside Festival (Guelph, ON), Sunfest (London, ON), the Montréal Jazz Festival (Montréal, QC), the Louisiana Folk Festival (Lafayette, LA) and the Houston International Jazz Festival. In addition, he has worked on music for films including To Walk with Lions, Born Free, Spirit in the Tree and a documentary on Jane Goodall.

Axé Capoeira (Toronto)

Grupo Axé Capoeira began in Recife, Brazil in 1982. Today, with academies throughout Canada, United States, Europe, Asia and South America, the Grupo continues to rise as one of the world's leading Capoeira organizations. Backed by worldwide releases of six albums of music on CD, the video release of the 2000 International Encounter and two Performance videos from the Axé Capoeira Volume IV and V CD releases, enrollment continues to steadily increase. The Grupo also continues to travel around the world promoting Brazilian culture, music and dance, and participating in Capoeira and open martial art exhibitions and competitions.

The Centre for Dance Performance attempts to inform people of the opportunities in dance at McMaster University and in the City of Hamilton, and to foster a creative and thriving dance community. Our work with recreational dance, special populations, school groups, a talent agency, professional dancers, MSU clubs, community organizations and performing varsity companies makes the Centre for Dance Performance a unique Canadian and global university organization.
