Plein Air at Dundurn Kitchen Garden: 1-Day Workshop

9:30 AM - 1:30 PM

Thursday, August 14, 2025

Registration Required

Location: Historic Kitchen Garden at Dundurn Castle

Spend the day in Dundurn Castle’s Historic Kitchen Garden with Artist Instructor Pamela Dey for a plein air painting workshop, inspired by the Impressionist works of Helen McNicoll.

The day will begin with a guided tour of Dundurn’s Historic Kitchen Garden. Students will then spend the workshop in the garden, where Pamela Dey will guide you in capturing the beauty of nature, just as McNicoll did in her outdoor paintings. Learn to observe light, color, and composition as you paint in the fresh air.

Open to all skill levels. Bring your own supplies and enjoy a day of creativity and inspiration in a beautiful setting.

Registration includes workshop, private tour and early access to the Kitchen Garden.

Spaces are limited. Advance registration required.

Dundurn’s Historic Kitchen Garden is one of Hamilton’s hidden gems. This guided tour shares stories about the extensive history of the landscape, the restoration of the garden, and the hundreds of heirloom fruits, vegetables, and flowers now growing. Walk with your guide along manicured paths to smell the flowers, sample the produce, and understand why Sophia MacNab called it “a little paradise” in 1846.

Headshot of Pamela Dey - woman with dark short hairInstructor Bio: Pamela gets her inspiration of painting from nature in and around North America. Her artistic process involves taking notes from nature while visiting lakes, trails and provincial parks and she dedicates a significant amount of time doing plein air painting on location and larger works in her studio using Oil, Acrylic and Watercolor. Pamela likes to experiment and explore various mediums, gels, cold wax, building layers and textures, mixed media, collage, printmaking,

Despite the fact that her formal education and career was in science as a researcher, Pamela found peace and satisfaction in her continuous involvement with painting landscapes from North America as she travelled to various places for her corporate job. Creativity finally took over and she found herself devoting all her time to Painting. Primarily a Self-Taught Artist, Pamela attended various Artist Workshops, has 50 years of Painting and Drawing experience and has a Certificate in Art Fundamentals from Central Technical School, Toronto

Pamela is an art instructor with various continuous general interest programs for adults and taught numerous students over the years. She also teaches Art independently to individuals and corporate groups enabling team building and inspiring creativity. Pamela has painted for charity causes, community building, and uses Art to support social causes. Pamela has won many Art awards and has exhibited her work with many galleries and studios in the York region, Toronto and Niagara region.
