The community was saddened by the news that Camill “Cam” Henry Theroux passed away at the age of 77 on December 28, 2025 after a courageous battle at Juravinski Hospital. Cam was a volunteer at the Art Gallery of Hamilton (AGH) for 10 years, and he made a difference in so many lives with his compassion, kindness, and love of people.
Cam’s career spanned 30 years with Stelco as a technical sales and pre-paint specialist before he went on to work with Namasco and Samuel Steel. After retiring in 2013, he remained active by volunteering at Theatre Aquarius, the Royal Botanical Gardens, and the AGH.

“When I picture Cam, I see his smiling face behind the Visitor Services desk,” says Hanno Weinberger, Chair of the AGH Volunteer Association Executive. “He had such a warm and friendly demeanour about him. To me, he embodied the ideal AGH greeter and ambassador.”
After starting at the AGH as a Volunteer in Visitor Services, Cam trained to become a Docent and he enjoyed touring visitors through the Gallery’s many exhibitions over the years. He also served on the Volunteer Recruitment Committeee, and on the Volunteer Executive for six years as Vice Chair, Chair, and Past Chair.
In 2016, Cam was honoured with the Ruth McCuaig Volunteer of the Year Award alongside his colleague Jennifer Powell-Fralick. The award was a wonderful way to honour such a beloved member of the AGH community.
“Cam was always happy to offer his guidance and share his experience with others,” recalls Margaret Fong, Past Chair of the AGH Volunteer Association Executive. “I’ll never forget when he served at his final Volunteer Executive meeting in 2023 – he decided to surprise us by gifting each of us a unique handmade charcuterie board! It’s a forever reminder of his kind and generous spirit.”
AGH Volunteers and staff fondly recall how he would brighten up any room.
“Working with Cam was wonderful,” says Kim Savas, Visitor Services. “He had a great sense of humour and was a pleasure to be around. Always friendly and helpful to our guests. I have fond memories of so many good chats. When Cam resigned from Visitor Services, we made sure he knew how much we appreciated him and his years of service, and how he would be truly missed by all of his friends at the Gallery.”

On behalf of everyone at the AGH, we send all our best thoughts and wishes to Cam’s family during this difficult time.
“Cam was an inspiration to all the Volunteers with whom he connected,” says Hanno. “His joy of volunteering and his commitment to the Gallery were always on display. We are grateful for all he did and we miss him dearly.”
